As an R3 Biofuels partner, meat and poultry processors can more than double
annual profits. This can be achieved through the use of cutting edge technology
that refines byproduct by running it through a two step process.
Stage One: Protein Meal
The first stage dehydrates the byproducts and separates the proteins from the
fats. The dehydrated protein material can then be turned into a meal product
that is sold as an animal feed.
Step Two: Glycerin
The second step takes the tallow and further processes it into glycerin and
biodiesel fuel. The glycerin is sold for a variety of commercial applications,
including cosmetics.
Step Two: Biodiesel
Along with glycerin, an average plant can produce 750,000 gallons of biodiesel
a year. Biodiesel offers a number of advantages over petrodiesel including:
- Biodegradable and non-toxic
- Clean burning
- Reduces engine wear
- Reduces reliance on foreign oil
